Getting to interview stage can be exciting, but also nerve-wracking, as it can make or break your chance of progressing forward in the recruitment process.
Preparing as much as you can for your interview will help you come across as motivated and confident, and help to ensure those nerves are kept in check!
So, how can you prepare, and what other interview tips should you know?
- Ensure you read all the information provided to you about the interview – who you will be meeting, what to wear, where you need to go, what the format of the interview will be, what you will need to bring with you e.g form of ID
- Make a positive first impression!
- Dress appropriately for the interview and be well groomed
- Arrive early. If in person, then make sure you plan your route in advance and check if there are any delays, if it’s virtual, then log in to the call a few minutes beforehand
- Practice a firm handshake – it shouldn’t be limp, but don’t overcompensate with a crushing squeeze
- Do your research on the company and the programme or role well in advance, and avoid using generic statements. Consider picking out something that was really impressive to you and elaborate why.
- Think about what types of questions you may be asked and have some examples rehearsed. Remember to use the STAR method and to focus on what you did to contribute to the outcome.
- Show your passion – talk about something that is important to you that can demonstrate your experience, enthusiasm and transferable skills
- Be interested and engaging
- Use open body language and nonverbal cues – sit up straight, smile, use hand gestures when talking or have them clasped in front of you if you are worried about them shaking, maintain eye contact, nod when the interviewer is talking, be mindful of fidgeting or shaking your legs
- Turn off your phone or make sure it’s on silent before entering the interview. You don’t want the embarrassment of it ringing or vibrating mid-conversation.
- Its ok to take notes with you or have key points written down, but make sure you don’t read from the page if you do use them
- Make sure you ask one or two questions at the end of the interview. This shows someone who is serious about the opportunity. It could be anything from asking why the interviewer likes working for the company, to what they enjoy most about their role.
- Thank the interviewers for their time and re-affirm your interest in the position.
Extra tips for virtual interviews
- Check at least an hour before that your device and internet connection is working
- Ensure you are in a quiet place with no distractions or other people, and that you have an appropriate background behind you
- Practice with your camera ahead of time to make sure that it works
- Have a glass of water nearby in case you get thirsty
Most of all, try to enjoy the experience and make sure you are well prepared!
